Easy-Undelete 3.0 scans for deleted files in one of three scanning methods:
The Basic scanning method searches for deleted files in the file system records. Windows keeps a table with a listing for every file. When a file is deleted, its space in the table is marked as unused - but the data is not actually erased. Easy-Undelete 3.0 scans for entries marked as unused, and tries to find out if their data is still intact.
Advantages:
Since the Basic scan only scans the file system records, it is the fastest scanning method.
The only scanning method that can successfully recover non-contiguous ("fragmented") files.
Notes:
Suitable for finding deleted files on working volumes. The Basic scanning method scans the file system records - if the volume has been formatted, the file system records are gone and the Basic scan won't find any deleted files.
Supports NTFS, FAT32, FAT16 and FAT12 volumes.
The parent folder is determined for every deleted file. The special "ORPHAN" folder in the volume root will contain any files or folders whose parent can't be determined.
Unlike the Basic scanning method, the Physical scan operates on disk-level, and scans every cluster on the volume for the selected file types. Every file type has a unique signature which can identify it, and Easy-Undelete 3.0 looks for the signatures for every selected file type in every unused (free) cluster. Results are displayed according to file type.
Advantages:
Goes through every cluster on the volume, and is not dependent on the volume's file system records. The Physical scanning method can find deleted files on reformatted volumes, or on volumes where the file system records were damaged.
Particularly suitable for Photographers who want to recover images from a memory card - the Physical scanning method can recover many digital camera formats (such as JPEG and RAW files), even after the memory card was formatted. The Image Preview can be used to preview image files before recovery.
Notes:
Use the Physical scan if you can't find the files you need with the Basic scan.
The entire volume is scanned - takes much longer to complete then the Basic scan.
Only suitable for contiguous files.
As it's name suggests, this scannig method is similar to the Physical scan method, but instead of scanning clusters on logical volumes, the Exhaustive Physical scan goes through every sector in an entire physical drive (for e.g., the entire hard drive or floppy disk). The Exhaustive Physical scan completely ignores the file system, and can locate deleted files on any physical drive.
Advantages:
Goes through every sector on the drive, and is not dependent on any file system. The Exhaustive Physical scanning method can find deleted files on repartitioned, unpartitioned, or unidentified volumes (for e.g., Linux volumes like Ext3 or Reiser).
Notes:
Use the Exhaustive Physical scan if you can't find the files you need with the Basic scan or the Physical scan.
The entire volume is scanned - takes much longer to complete then the Physical scan or the Basic scan.
Only suitable for contiguous files.
By default, Easy-Undelete 3.0 shows the Scanning Wizard on startup. You can use the Scanning Wizard to choose the scanning method and the target volume, with handy instructions and tips to help you make the right choices.
If you choose to close or hide the wizard, Easy-Undelete 3.0 uses the Basic scan method when you select a volume from the Volumes list, and the Exhaustive Physical scan when you select a drive from the Physical drives list. If you want to choose a different scan method, open the Scanning Wizard by clicking on the
(Scanning Wizard) button on the toolbar or by selecting Scanning Wizard… from the Tools menu.

In the main application window, click on the volume you would like to scan from the Volumes list on the left. The Basic scan will begin automatically.
Click on the

When you click on a physical drive from the Physical Drives list in the main application window on the left, Easy-Undelete 3.0 will perform an Exhaustive Physical scan on the entire drive and will search for all supported file types.
After performing any scan, you can redo the scan and refresh the file list by pressing F5 or selecting Refresh from the View menu.
Easy-Undelete 3.0 displays only regular folders, deleted folders and deleted files. It won't display non-deleted files.
Deleted folders and non-deleted folders have different icons. Deleted folders have a
